In the build-up to Christmas, as well as the early moments of the new year, the conservatory sees a lot of use as a multi-function room, an overspill for guests, a dining space and even a spare bedroom for some families.
However, a lot of conservatories have unfortunately not been designed for all seasons, requiring repairs or refurbishments to make them a pleasant place to stay in.
Whilst at a push guests can keep their coat on or wear a blanket there are far more permanent solutions to get around the problems of a chilly conservatory over the winter months, particularly one that has a sharper chill to it than most.
With that in mind, as Christmas looms, here are some last-minute top tips for keeping your conservatory warm.
Replace Windows With Double Glazing
The best way to fix your conservatory for good and keep it suitable for all seasons is to replace any ageing glass with double or triple glazing.
Ideally, you should fit glass with a UV protective film or a window as well, as this can help make your conservatory more bearable over the summer months.
Fit Draughtproofing And Reseal Windows
Alternatively, insulate existing windows using weatherstripping or sealants to stop warm air from escaping and prevent the kinds of frosty draughts that can be particularly painful over the winter.
Because of the strong temperature swings a conservatory sees, this could have a much stronger impact on insulation than it would in other parts of the house.
Fit Curtains, Blinds Or Shutters
A thick set of curtains, fitted blinds or shutters will add an extra insulating layer between the window and the room itself, helping to block some of the draught on its own and creating a noticeably warmer, more comfortable room.
Exactly which system you prefer is up to you. However, if you have a glass roof then you will likely need fitted blinds, which can at times be costly, especially if you want ones that can automatically open and close.
Install Underfloor Heating
Whilst a conservatory can be added to a conventional heating system such as radiators, that is much harder to retrofit.
Although it is not so easy that anyone can install one themselves, an underfloor heating system can be a very effective way of keeping a conservatory warm because the heat emanates not from a radiator but from all around the room, leading to far fewer cold patches.
Depending on your existing floor, they can be relatively inexpensive to have professionally installed as well. Most flooring types can work with underfloor heating outside of particularly thick carpets, but a carpet of that type would provide its own insulation benefits.
Adding a rug can also help if underfloor heating is not an option, particularly if you lay insulation boards underneath it to add a little more comfort and warmth.
Choose The Right Portable Heater
An ever-reliable option is a portable heater, which can help to take the edge off of the winter chill. Infrared heaters tend to work best in this regard, as they warm up objects instead of the air, which can make them less energy-intensive.
