If your conservatory is in need of repairs, it can be easy to shut it off from the rest of your home and ignore it, although we wouldn’t recommend this approach!

While there are plenty of practical reasons why it’s worth investing in conservatory repairs, such as to prevent broader damage to your property or to stop your space from becoming unusable, there is another reason: to help you access nature all year round.

In the UK, the weather is far from consistent. This can make it a challenge to enjoy your outdoor space fully, especially if it is very rainy or cold. However, a conservatory can give you a way to spend time in nature even when the weather isn’t ideal.

Why make sure you have access to nature every day?

There are many benefits to ensuring you have access to nature and the great outdoors on a daily basis if possible, or at least a few times a week.

If you are lucky enough to have a conservatory at your home, you will already have the means to do so – now all you need to do is ensure it’s comfortable all year round so that you can make the most of this space.

Spending time in nature is known to be good for both our physical and mental health. Here are three reasons why:

Support your immune system

We should aim to spend between five and 15 minutes each day in sunlight if possible to boost our vitamin D production and in the process improve our bodies’ immune systems.

In the winter and on colder days this can be more challenging, either because we spend most of our daylight hours inside or because it is simply too cold to comfortably spend that long outdoors.

However, if you have a conservatory, you can get your daylight fix without having to brave the freezing conditions.

Regulate your body’s internal clock

What’s more, spending time in daylight – especially early in the morning – helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm. This is the 24-hour cycle we go through each day that regulates everything from our sleep pattern to our hormone levels and even appetite.

If your circadian rhythm falls out of sync for a few days, it can lead to drowsiness, a lack of concentration and poor coordination. However, when this occurs over a longer period, it increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular conditions.

Therefore having a safe and simple way to regulate your body’s natural internal clock, such as sipping your morning tea in your conservatory with daylight streaming in, can be excellent for your health in multiple ways.

Improve your creativity

Research also suggests that spending time in nature can boost creativity by making us more curious and helping spark new ideas. In addition, spending time in nature gives our brain an opportunity to recharge its directed attention.

This means that taking a break to sit in your conservatory with the sights and sounds of nature around you could be exactly what you need if you’re trying to untangle a tricky problem or seeking creative inspiration.

The key, however, is to ensure this is a serene space and one that is largely free from distractions. That means no screens or other technology that could draw your focus away from the natural environment.

How can repairing my conservatory help me spend more time in nature?

By design, conservatories give you a window into the outside world. They are intended as a way to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor living, which is why they can be such a soothing space to make use of if you want more nature time.

When you are exploring what repairs your conservatory needs, consider what will make it a comfortable environment all year round.

Of course, if there are any leaks or structural issues, you need to fix those first as they will impact your ability to use your conservatory safely. But beyond that, consider how modifications to your conservatory could make it a more pleasant space.

For instance, perhaps swapping its old UPVC roof for a tiled roof could make it a more usable space all year round by helping to better regulate the room’s temperature?

Or would it be better to replace a polycarbonate roof with glass panels to let natural light flood in all year round? There is no single solution that fits every home. The right solution will be tailored to both how you want to use your conservatory and your property.
